Kumiho_Unsung Myth

Commentary :ใ€€Oh Hearyon(Photographer, Curator)

Artist Choi Chi-kwon is a photographer who works with a critical mind against the image of society to which we belong. His original works did so in โ€˜The Map of Koreaโ€™ and โ€˜Hello Democracy?.โ€™ Even Kumiho(ไนๅฐพ็‹, nine tailed fox), which is published this time, is the work of having a theme as the reflective view on the society and on our image of proceeding with living there. To say our story, the artist concentrates naturally on the surrounding image and our reflection. His main subjects include all things around such as a daily street, the signboards & people of having been met on the trip, the sky & wind, and a part of todayโ€™s morning paper. Urban image or landscape and a person that he caught are the familiar appearances available for being often seen around us or in newspaper headlines. The inside of his picture is seen the image of the artist who is walking like the city stroller(Flanuer) about which Baudelaire talked, the street he would have been loitering around and by, the cars, people, signboards, and is sometimes shown his eyes in the middle of the tangled fragments of newspapers.

Documentary in Choi Chi-kwonโ€™s style

Like Andreas Feiningerโ€™s saying โ€œOf all modern hieroglyphic languages, the most perfect is photography,โ€ a photo is a language that is used in which people deliver their own idea to other people. Hence, a photo is determined an artistโ€™s unique photo style depending on the usage of words with having own expression and grammar. Photographic usage implies everything of forming a photo. That is to say, the usage that a photographer talks through a photo includes elements such as a sight or a view of looking at a situation, the structure starting from the perception mode, the way light is used, and light & shade. And when these factors are similarly repeated in many works, the artistโ€™s own style is implemented.

In that sense, artist Choi Chi-kwon has his own style. Artist Choi Chi-kwonโ€™s mental and technical photographic usage includes the artistโ€™s view of contemplatively looking at the subject as objet, the strange expression of the familiar object in order to manifest own thought and intention, and the insertion of metaphor that anybody can understand into its unfamiliarity. It is what shows from a different perspective that had failed to be conscious because of being too familiar enough to make it feel strange in art. This deliberately obstructs the immersion in the work and gives it a critical distance, thereby making it have the process of thinking and the time of imagination. Artist Choi Chi-kwon opened up the possibility of a new imagination by dismantling the original location and meaning in which the subject is situated, resulting in arranging the contradictory and conflicting elements in the same image or in placing them in a completely different environment, and by occasionally using materials such as cloth and paper, resulting in allowing people of trying to make the subject ambiguously to feel strange and awkward. In this way, he made his own identity, namely, Choi Chi-kwon style without sticking to the old value of photography as saying of objectively reproducing the truth literally.

Kumiho(ไนๅฐพ็‹, nine tailed fox) inside me

The series titled โ€˜Kumiho_Unsung Mythโ€™ is a story about the unreasonable & contradictory good and evil and about irrational human nature. To express the double & contradictory human image of indulging in violence to realize justice, of promoting trickery(ๆฌŠ่ฌ€่ก“ๆ•ธ) as a realistic means for a great cause even with giving a value to the cause, and of trying not to understand the position and circumstances of others due to being stricken just with own thoughts and feelings, the artist created the whole by selecting the scattered images in each, and contained the special narrative that he pursues by using metaphor dubbed Kumiho.

Artist Choi Chi-kwon reveals society and human nature of being incomprehensible, unreasonable and contradictory through grotesque humor. As he intended, his photo is dreamy and unrealistic, but paradoxically realistic like having a nightmare. It is half ridiculous and half serious. The image as if being compounded of layers in dream and reality likewise leads to awakening to the reality like a nightmare of being met these days.

The series โ€˜Kumiho_Unsung Mythโ€™ was begun from the artistโ€™s affection for human beings. Through the work, he asks us about humanity and human value.

In his working note, the artist says, โ€œ<Kumiho_Unsung Myth> is included Kumiho of seeing it and us of looking at the photo.โ€ Is Kumiho in half human and half fox after hard work a human? or a fox? Are we looking at the photo a human? or a fox?

In the age with peep show(็‘คๆฑ ้ก) in a confusion of value, our Kumiho desires to become a human being.

May we also become a human?

Thesis

There were a god and a human being.

They harmonized with coexisting each other.

There was a difference between the god like light and the human being like a shadow. However, both lived together as one source of origin.

The light sang god. The shadow recorded a human.

As if the god and the human communicate with each other, the world of myth had existed in that matter.

antithesis

Though, because only god’s ideal is called into the world,

the human greed dubbed even that is mine led to making the god a mere prejudice against humanity.

God also has no way to save humans any more, so

The shadow challenged by light lost harmony due to its rudeness, resulting in having been left only poison that just got rotten black.

God is just shining, but failed to realize a poisoned shadow.

As the stupid human failed to write godโ€™s history any more, both ended in becoming mutually different world.

synthesis

After it, 1,000 years, and 1,000 years, and another 1,000 yearsโ€™ waiting

We are still searching for the world of myth.

But there are so many foolish and greedy people in the wake of looking ahead standing on top of the world of the 21st century now.

Human nature that repeats itself again in any world

Stupid people who can’t live without killing each other

They kill each other and have fun.

โ€œWhere did you see humans worse than a brute?โ€

And we censure the contradictions and irregularities of this world in accordance with each livelihood(ๅœ–็”Ÿ).

When looking under its feet in a moment, the image is neither a god nor a human being. Four legs covered with golden hair and nine-pronged tail,

The image of a 3,000-year-old fox in this world is strange.

A thousand years pass again, but

Myth is not called any more.

Donโ€™t cry because of feeling victimized and oppressive.

This is the human world.
